Celebrating Fantastic People & Long-lasting Partnerships

Thursday 19th December 2019

Polypipe Middle East recently celebrated 60 years of one of its pioneering brands, Terrain, in the region.

Terrain invented the first ever PVC pipes in 1947 and the story grew from there. Since then, it’s been a journey of positive growth and development for both Terrain and Polypipe Middle East.

In light of recent celebrations, Managing Director at Polypipe Middle East, Adam Smith, shared insight into the brand’s successful partnerships and their ever-growing prevalence in the region. He discussed unique ways in which Polypipe Middle East continue to foster green urbanisation and promote sustainability in the region.

People & Partnership

“Polypipe is all about people and partnership”, states Smith. With Terrain’s long history in the region, the brand has created partnerships all over the GCC spanning up to 50 years. These partnerships have been essential to Polypipe Middle East’s growth.

“Polypipe Middle East starts working at the very concept of a project with the client and we look at geography, the type of buildings, the roads and the infrastructure. We can work on anything from a single villa up to a major urban city”, says Smith. Polypipe Middle East believe in a holistic approach to every project, delivering fit-for-purpose solutions that provide social, environmental and commercial benefits for clients. Smith describes how Polypipe Middle East builds lasting relationships by creating value for clients and partnering with them through every step of the supply chain. Coupled with personalised and professional customer service and a genuine drive to achieve the best value for every task at hand, Polypipe Middle East has nurtured and maintained meaningful partnerships that support mutual growth.

For the 60th anniversary of Terrain in the region, a feat which would have not been possible without a network of trusted partners in the GCC, Polypipe Middle East hosted a Gala Dinner and Appreciation Awards Ceremony for their distributors and team at the iconic Queen Elizabeth II in Dubai, UAE. Click here to see highlights from the event.

Greener Solutions

Sustainability lies at the heart of everything Polypipe Middle East do. Passionate about enhancing urban communities, Polypipe Middle East offers end-to-end water management and drainage solutions that not only create happier, healthier communities but also deliver increased environmental benefits and cost efficiency.

“Polypipe solutions by nature are sustainable. They are greener to manufacture and less toxic to the environment. We foster green urbanisation so that by nature of the solution we are improving the climate and also the environment that we live in”, describes Smith. Polypipe Middle East create solutions that embrace and enhance our natural environment.

For example, drainage solutions are created specifically for high-rise buildings and the urban environment, allowing for the elimination of toxic leaks and foul odours that can cause serious health problems. Terrain drainage systems were installed in Marina Gate, Dubai Marina’s most iconic high-rise building. Terrain P.A.P.A and Pleura were used in order to increase the lettable area for the developer whilst providing an engineered solution to mitigate foul odours, a problem often faced in the region.

Sustainable water management solutions work with water, rather than against it. Offering solutions that support the creation of green roofs and green spaces, Polypipe Middle East is exploring ways to innovate in their field. Smith elaborates on innovation in the manufacturing sector stating that, “I think we are growing to embrace innovators; the manufacturing sector tends to be the innovators and we can apply the solutions, once we fully understand the problems.” For the Dubai Expo 2020, over 20,000 square metres of Polypipe’s Permavoid solution was supplied to enhance stormwater management and prevent local flooding. Roofs were used for attenuation, allowing for the removal of downstream infrastructure and saving the client millions.

By taking extra steps to fully understand each environment’s unique challenges, Polypipe Middle East is able find the right solution through technical expertise and innovation.

Smith discussed the future of engineered drainage solutions at Polypipe Middle East, which increasingly focus on the provision of greener, smarter solutions, stating that, “For us, it’s all about smart cities. So that’s smart infrastructure and smart buildings. We look at indoor air quality, outdoor air quality, green urbanisation and better water management within our cities.”

Smith believes that “innovation is at the heart of Polypipe”. He explains that at Polypipe Middle East, innovation depends on how close they are to their customers; it’s about truly understanding the marketplace and its needs, which continues to help the organisation pioneer solutions to stay ahead of the competition.

Creating Happier, Healthier Communities

When asked about the importance of enhancing the communities we live, Smith says the key is designing for the future. Not designing for the next two to five years but trying to predict weather patterns for the next forty to fifty years. This is what allows Polypipe Middle East to provide solutions that support resiliency.

The key to building resilient cities is understanding each location’s unique challenges and addressing them in an efficient and sustainable manner. For example, the urban population in the Middle East is predicted to double by 2050. Smith explains, “One of the key challenges for the Middle East is rapid urbanisation. We’re urbanising faster than our technology can keep up, which in one way is positive but we’re looking at an unprecedented build rate.” Fortunately, he follows up describing that Polypipe Middle East offer a number of engineered solutions that have an integrated benefit to our built environment.

Smith elaborates that “Polypipe work from the very start, as early engagement is key. It’s about understanding what people need, when they need it and how. Then, as innovators in the industry, we can come together and develop solutions bespoke for that need.” Smith explains how every country and every climate is different. Every urban environment is slightly different. Polypipe Middle East can use their previous history, knowledge and experience to address these differences and develop solutions that are specific to each economy.

Looking Ahead

At Polypipe Middle East, the goal is to support sustainability and enable a healthier future for urban environments. When it comes to sustainability goals, Polypipe Middle East’s vision aligns with that of many countries in the GCC. When asked about Polypipe Middle East’s role in supporting the region’s visions for sustainability, Smith says, “the region has very ambitious sustainability goals built into nation visions, they focus on economic and climate goals. Polypipe are very much an enabler in this scene”.

This year, Polypipe Middle East have invested heavily in bringing project mapping to the fore of everything they do. “Using a specialist consultancy, we ran an in-depth training session, equipping us with the tools and techniques to truly track and succeed in today’s market”, explains Smith. The growing popularity of sustainable solutions further encourages Polypipe Middle East to offer specialised, engineered solutions that increase efficiency whilst maximising profit for projects.

Going forward, Polypipe Middle East will continue to provide solutions that preserve our planet and its people. Managing Director, Adam Smith, explains how Polypipe Middle East is committed to contributing to the creation of positive communties, stating, "knowledge is essential for Polypipe to continue to lead the industry, value is created by our people for our clients as we strive to help provide greener, leaner and meaner solutions for future water management and public health problems."
