Managing water at source for sport pitches
With India’s ambition of hosting big sporting events in the future, the Indian government endeavors to promote sports in the country, among others, at grassroots level. With the aim of exchanging knowledge on innovative sports infrastructure, research and coaching, the concept of Colourfield, New Delhi came into execution.
Colourfield is a durable, multi-functional and sustainable mini sports arena that combines a social sports education program with a high level innovative multi-sports facility. Colourfield was unveiled in New Delhi, in the shadow of the famous 60,000-seater Nehru Stadium in December 2016 and was designed to provide quality sports facilities, lighting, clean drinking water due to a Greensource system and a safe sporting environment for children.
The installation of the Permavoid, a sub base of the sports pitch in New Delhi allowed managing surface water at source and as close to where it falls as possible. The shallow geocellular water conservation system have cells with a unique jointing mechanism which means its exceptional strength provided an interlocking ‘raft’ that supported the structural loads. The water within the system is stored in the 85mm units and used for passive irrigation of the pitch resulting in huge savings in water usage.
A pitch of 8000m2 has the capacity to store approximately 680,000 litres of water. Through the use of vertical capillary fibre cylinders in the pitch’s hollow Permavoid sub base it is possible to naturally irrigate from the bottom up. The Permavoid system is designed and tested for use in place of a traditional aggregate sub-base improving reliability, storage volumes and providing a more sustainable solution compared to traditional methods. The design and installation of the Colourfield sports arena alongside the adoption of best practices had been customized according to the Indian context.
